Neighborhoods

The Envirenew Initiative evolved out of The Salvation Army’s succession of disaster recovery programs. In the wake of hurricane Katrina, the Salvation Army and other rebuilding efforts initially focused on providing homeowners with newly built or reconstructed homes via conventional mechanisms such as case management agencies. While successful for individual families, researchers have found that this avenue for neighborhood recovery cannot support the revitalization of the community as a whole. In order to restore entire communities, researchers identified the demand for a more centralized home development process.

Upon adopting this framework, it became clear that a neighborhood-based revitalization strategy would be applicable not only to communities recovering from disaster, but also to those in general need of real estate and economic stimulation. Thus Envirenew has broadened its scope to target neighborhoods whose homes have not been directly damaged by flooding.
